Cable Positive Power Awards Honor Three Leaders in Fight Against HIV/AIDS
NEW YORK - March 6, 2008
On March 4, 2008, at Manhattan’s Marriott Marquis, Cable Positive, the cable industry’s AIDS action organization, nearly 800 members of the cable industry, as well as distinguished members of the HIV/AIDS community gathered for the 2008 Power Awards, which recognizes the outstanding work being done in the fight against AIDS. Michael Willner, Vice Chairmain & CEO of Insight Communications, received The Leadership Award, Dr. Helene Gayle, President & CEO of CARE, received The Humanitarian Award and Bill Roedy, Vice-Chairman of MTV Networks, received The Joel A. Berger Award.
This year’s event celebrated Cable Positive’s 16th anniversary of battling the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and for the 11th consecutive year, raised over $1million.
The event was hosted by Regan Hofmann, Editor-in-Chief, POZ Magazine, who was featured in Cable Positive’s Positive Voices: Women & HIV documentary and is also appearing in Kenneth Cole’s newest ad campaign “25 Years of Non-Uniform Thinking,” which celebrates the stories of courageous individuals. Award presenters include Grammy Award-Winning artist Wyclef Jean, actress CCH Pounder (from the hit FX series The Shield), and actresses Amy Davidson and Sharon Lawrence (Lifetime Movie Network’s The Capture of the Green River Killer).
Andrea Wong, President & CEO of Lifetime Entertainment, Bob Miron, Chairman & CEO of Advance/Newhouse, Geraldine Laybourne, Founder of Oxygen Media, Kyle McSlarrow, President & CEO of NCTA and Judy McGrath, Chairman & CEO of MTV Networks all joined Cable Positive to co-chair this year’s event and pay tribute to those so committed to this fight.
“This was our last big fundraising event as per the re-alignment of the cable industry’s events and it could not have been a more successful send off,” said Steve Villano, President & CEO, Cable Positive. “For the 11th consecutive year we have raised over $1 million at our Annual Benefit Dinner, and as an organization have raised the bar again for the cable industry’s commitment for the fight against HIV/AIDS.”
ABOUT CABLE POSITIVE’S ANNUAL BENEFIT DINNER: Cable Positive’s annual benefit event continues to be the organizations primary source of revenue and premier event. Each year, for the last 11 years, the annual benefit has raised over $1 million dollars. Last year’s event set a record mark, raising $1.6 million. The funds go directly to support Cable Positive’s national outreach efforts.
