Cable industry folks from the Metro DC area struck out against AIDS and HIV on June 26, 2006

Metro DC area cable industry guru’s took a few hours to dine, network and bowl for a cause at Lucky Strikes Lanes. Braving 10+ inches of torrential rains, they navigated the flooded streets of DC and gathered to raise much needed funds for Cable Positive and Metro Teen aids.

The C-SPAN and CableWorld-CableFax teams earned the award for Best Team Spirit and best team name went to Discovery’s “Guts to Glory” crew. John Fant of TV One brought home the prize for highest score, while the opposite award went to Sadia Baloch of CTAM, who CableFax dubbed as the night’s “Most Honest Bowler”.

Thanks to sponsors Cox, BET, and AmericanLife TV and prize sponsors, National Geographic and The Tennis Channel.

Thanks to the following companies for sponsoring one or more teams BET, CTAM, CableWorld-CableFax, Cox, C-SPAN, Discovery, NCTA, TV One, and WICT

Polaroid Party

Take a Polaroid for charity? Sounds like a crazy idea? Well, the newly formed Baltimore/Washington DC chapter did just that on April 14 to raise awareness of the chapter’s efforts to support the fight against HIV/AIDS locally. The Red Maple was filled with more than 50 cable industry professionals who gathered together for food, drink, Polaroids and to learn more about what Cable Positive Baltimore/Washington DC is all about. Chapter Chair Jennifer Price of Renegade officially announced that the chapter’s upcoming fundraising efforts would benefit Metro TeenAIDS, an AIDS service organization in the Washington DC area empowering young people in the fight against HIV and AIDS. A basket filled with cable industry premiums was raffled raising a $100, Polaroid included.

Baltimore DC officers Sharon Radziewski of NCTA, Shelly Good-Cook of CTAM, Cable Positive's Nancy Schadoff and Jennifer Price of Renegade.

A Heartfelt Event

The newly formed Baltimore/Washington DC Chapter of Cable Positive held its first event, The Love Yourself Valentine Mixer, on February 9 at National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA) headquarters. Attendees were treated to a incredible musical performance by Cash Money!, who donated their time and efforts, along with the opportunity to win great door prizes provided by BET, NCTA, Cable Positive, CTAM and Renegade. Cable FAX Daily said "We're not used to seeing NCTA HQ make like a hip music bar, but props to the Mass Ave crew for donating mood lighting, cocktails table, open bar, live music and sumptuous spread to welcome to life Cable Positive's DC/Baltimore Chapter." It was a great event that brings great promise for what is to come from this chapter.

COMMUNITY

Cable Positive's DC Chapter supports: Metro TeenAIDS

Metro TeenAIDS provides resources to help young people fight AIDS and support each other. Unlike any other organization in the Washington, DC area, Metro TeenAIDS focuses all of its efforts on the special prevention, education, and treatment needs of young people.

Advancing the overall health of at-risk and HIV-infected adolescents is within our community's power. Metro TeenAIDS advances community prevention efforts by:

  • mobilizing young people in support of their peers
  • battling denial and indifference by raising community awareness about the threat HIV/AIDS poses to young people
  • providing HIV information and innovative prevention strategies to young people and the adults in contact with them
  • uniting with other organizations to ensure that teenagers receive adolescent-appropriate and easily accessible prevention, health care, and counseling services as well as safe recreational opportunities
  • developing comprehensive programs which address the many co-factors of adolescent HIV infection -- including low self-esteem, drug and alcohol abuse, dangerously unproductive free time, and exposure to peer groups which encourage unhealthy and risky behavior
