NEW YORK, NY - November 5, 2002
Cable Positive, the cable and telecommunications industry's AIDS action organization, has named David Gale, Senior Vice President of MTV Films and Gwen Marcus, EVP Operations and General Counsel, Showtime Networks Inc as the 2002 Brad Wojcoski Memorial Award recipients. As part of the honor, Cable Positive granted $1,250 to the AIDS organization of each recipient's choice. Marcus named Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS while Gale designated Camp Pacific Heartland, a camp for HIV-positive children to be the beneficiary of his award. Both honorees are highly involved with each organization.
"David Gale and Gwen Marcus are sparkling examples of cable professionals who devote their time, talent, energy, and commitment to the on-going battle against HIV/AIDS," said Steve Villano, Cable Positive's President and CEO. "They are a credit to the industry, to the employees of MTV and Showtime, and to the Viacom family, which has made AIDS awareness and prevention a top priority. Cable Positive is proud to be in association with them."
David Gale, the producer of the hit movie, "Jackass, The Movie" has used his passion for the fight against AIDS and his position at MTV Films to raise awareness of the AIDS epidemic and its effects on children. In addition to his efforts at MTV Films, David has contributed to the fight against AIDS by serving as chairman of Camp Pacific Heartland, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing recreational opportunities through summer camping programs for children infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. In recent years, David has leveraged his position within the industry to garner the support of celebrities such as Brandi, David Arquette, and Chris Tucker to come to Camp Pacific Heartland and interact with children. "This award means more to me than all of the success that "Jackass, The Movie" has enjoyed," Gale said.
Gwen Marcus, a long-time AIDS activist, was recognized for her outstanding fundraising efforts to support AIDS Walk NY, an annual fundraiser to benefit New York City's largest AIDS service organization, Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC). Her dedication to the fight against AIDS is evident by the fact that for the past five years, Gwen has been the top individual fundraiser for the event, single handedly raising over $55,000 this year alone. Gwen's effort and commitment have played a major role in Viacom leading the AIDS walk's fundraising efforts for the fifth consecutive year as well, by raising more than $105,000.
Established in 1993 in honor of Brad Wojcoski, an employee of HBO and one of the original members of Cable Positive's Board of Directors, the award recognizes cable industry employees who have made significant contributions to the fight against AIDS in their community.
