NEW YORK, NY - November 15, 2002
For the first time in its ten year history, Cable Positive, the cable and telecommunications industry's national non-profit AIDS action organization, will make their World AIDS Day (December 1) public service announcements (PSAs) available to cable networks and systems via a satellite feed donated by STARZ! Encore.
This year, Cable Positive has teamed up with the Ad Council to distribute a new PSA sponsored by the UN Foundation and created pro bono by ad agency Leo Burnett USA. The new campaign uses a portrayal of children orphaned by AIDS in an effort to raise awareness of the global AIDS crisis. The engaging television PSAs depict a world in which young children live in a city without the help and love of parents and other adults. Somber music plays in the background as children walk the streets unaccompanied, try to cook and wash themselves, and perform other roles without adults. The spots conclude with a voiceover by actor Michael Douglas equating the 14 million children orphaned as a result of AIDS with every child under the age of five in America. Viewers then see and hear the campaign tagline, "AIDS is preventable. Apathy is lethal." To view the work, you can visit www.adcouncil.org/campaigns/apathy_is_lethal. Cable Positive is also offering spots with spokesperson Rebekka Armstrong, HIV-positive Playboy Playmate, and animated spots targeting young people and communities of color. In addition, some PSAs are available in Spanish language versions. To view Cable Positive's award-winning PSAs, go to www.cablepositive.org.

Since 1994, Cable Positive has united the talents, access, and resources of the cable and telecommunications industry to fight the AIDS epidemic in support of World AIDS Day. Throughout the months of November and December, cable networks and systems help raise AIDS awareness and promote HIV prevention through the airing of Cable Positive's PSAs.
Cable Positive is a national non-profit organization that was founded in February 1992 by three concerned cable executives with the mission of organizing cable's resources in the fight against AIDS. Cable Positive is dedicated to unifying the talents, resources, access and influence of the communications industry to raise AIDS awareness; to fund AIDS education, research and care; and to promote a more compassionate climate for people whose lives have been affected by HIV and AIDS. Cable Positive has grown to include supporters from every major cable network, multiple system operator, cable system, hardware manufacturer, trade association, media publication, and affiliated industry vendors and suppliers. Since 1992, Cable Positive has raised more than $9 million in the fight against AIDS. For more information about Cable Positive, call 212-459-1502 or log on to www.cablepositive.org.
