CABLE POSITIVE TO HONOR CAHNERS' WILLIAM MCGORRY WITH 2002 JOEL A. BERGER AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO THE FIGHT AGAINST HIV/AIDS

NEW YORK, NY - November 19, 2001
Cable Positive, the cable and telecommunications industry's AIDS action organization, will honor industry stalwart and long-time Cable Positive supporter William McGorry, Senior Vice President, Cahners Television and Telecom Group, at Absolutely Positively: An Evening to Benefit Cable Positive at New York's Marriott Marquis, located in the heart of Times Square, on Thursday, April 25, 2002. Cable Positive's prestigious Joel A. Berger Award is presented each year at the annual benefit dinner to the industry leader who has contributed significantly to the fight against HIV/AIDS. Carole Black, President and CEO, Lifetime Entertainment Services, and Larry Divney, President and CEO, Comedy Central, will serve as dinner co-chairs for the benefit dinner.

McGorry, an honorary chair of Cable Positive, since its inception in 1992, was one of the key people who nurtured Cable Positive in its infancy by providing pages and pages of free ad space in Chilton Communications, which later became Cahners' publications to boost the organization's industry recognition and support early on.

"There could be no more fitting person to present the Joel Berger Award to in recognition of Cable Positive's good work over the past decade than Bill McGorry," said Larry Divney.

McGorry was a close colleague of Joel Berger, former publisher of Multichannel News and Cablevision, and a leading voice in the industry's efforts to marshal its vast resources against HIV/AIDS, who died of AIDS in 1995. Not only were they colleagues at Cahners, McGorry and Berger helped build Cable Positive as an organization. McGorry took care of Joel during the final stages of his friend's life by making sure Berger had ample health insurance, company benefits and the dignity of his work, right up until the end of Berger's life.

"It is particularly meaningful that Bill McGorry is the recipient of Cable Positive's 2002 Joel Berger Award," said Carole Black. "Bill is the individual who stood up and supported Joel -- as employer, mentor and friend -- in his battle against HIV and AIDS, and he embodies our industry's ten year commitment to this important issue."

Since 1992, Cable Positive has worked with the cable industry to provide more than $2 million to AIDS service organizations across the country for outreach and education through direct grants and more than $1 million for HIV and AIDS research and clinical care. Twice a year in support of National HIV Testing Day (June 27) and World AIDS Day (December 1), Cable Positive unites cable networks and systems to telecast public service announcements (PSAs) to the more than 70 million cable television households to provide them with lifesaving information about HIV/AIDS.

"Our Board of Directors felt that Bill McGorry personifies the compassionate, dedicated commitment to fighting HIV/AIDS that Cable Positive was created for," Rob Stoddard, AT&T Broadband, and Cable Positive Board President said. "Honoring him at our dinner is a recognition of what industry leaders have accomplished against HIV/AIDS and of the determination and drive needed to meet the challenges that are ahead of us as 45,000 Americans are infected with HIV each year."

Past Cable Positive Joel A. Berger Award recipients are James L. Dolan, Cablevision Systems Corporation (2001), Marc B. Nathanson (2000), Anne Sweeney ABC/Disney (1999), Leo Hindery Jr. (1998), Dick Aurelio (1997) and Winston H. "Tony" Cox (1996- posthumously) and Jeffrey Bewkes and Michael Fuchs (1995). The award is named in honor of Joel A. Berger, a Cable Positive Honorary Chair and the group publisher of Multichannel News and Cablevision Magazine, who died of AIDS in 1995.
