National Organization Honors
“Positively Cable” Music Revue Among Nation’s
Best
DENVER, CO / NEW YORK, NY - April 15, 2003
“Positively Cable,” an annual musical revue fundraiser
produced by Cable Positive’s Denver Chapter, was honored
as one of the best community affairs program by the Cable Television
Public Affairs Association (CTPAA), is the only national, professional
organization specifically addressing the issues, needs, and interests
of the cable industry's public affairs professionals, with a 2003
Beacon Award. The Beacon Awards nationally recognize excellence
in public affairs throughout the cable industry.
Zelda Martens, “Positively Cable” co-chair commented,
“we are all very excited that the good work of so many Denver
cable industry volunteers was recognized. A dedicated team of
volunteers worked for months to put on this event that raises
money for the Cable Positive, the cable and telecommunications
industry’s AIDS action organization, and for Rainbow House,
a Denver facility for children impacted by the HIV virus.”
Event co-chair Debbie Barackman of iNDEMAND added, “Even
as the economy declined in Denver and charities were seeing up
to a 50 percent decrease in donations, the 2002 Positively Cable
event took in $77,000 thanks to tremendous support from the industry.
We’re especially grateful to our two largest contributors,
AT&T Broadband and Sullivan Direct.”
Creative Chair Paul Braun, of Time Warner Cable National Division
said, “Positively Cable has a long-standing tradition of
poking fun at the cable industry. In a tough year, it was great
for those in the show and in the audience to be able to laugh
at themselves.” Subtitled “Cable Gets the Royal Flush”,
Positively Cable ’02 had a Las Vegas heist plot and a gambling
and gangsters theme. A chorus line of cable industry executives
joined five professional performers from Rave Reviews to make
fun of worthless stock options, dicey employment prospects, technology,
sports programming, industry newsmakers, and more. Songs included
such hits as, ”The Future’s V.O.D.”, to the
tune ”The Lady is a Tramp” and ‘The Adelphia
Way to the tune of “Cabaret.”
The CTPAA received 422 Beacon entries this year – evidence
of the strong and continuing commitment by the cable industry
to public affairs. Finalists and winners were selected after an
extensive two-phase judging process in Washington, DC, at the
NCTA headquarters in January.
"Winner status is truly an outstanding achievement,"
said Steve Jones, Executive Director of CTPAA. "The requirements
to become a winner are more demanding than ever before. These
award winning projects reflect the cable industry’s strong
commitment to public affairs; to continue to provide quality entertainment,
technological advances, and educational initiatives to communities
across the country."
