Adelphia, Comcast, Cox, Insight,
and Time Warner Systems Raise AIDS Awareness to the Continuing
AIDS Epidemic
NEW YORK, NY - June 26, 2003
As part of Cable Positive’s ongoing commitment to increase
AIDS awareness, the cable and telecommunications industry’s
AIDS action organization will team up with 25 cable systems across
the country to air the documentary AIDS in the 21st Century
in support of Cable Positive’s 2003 National HIV Testing
Day (June 27) campaign. Cable systems from multiple system operators
(MSOs) Adelphia, Comcast, Cox, Insight, and Time Warner will air
the documentary in an effort to remind millions of Americans that
the AIDS epidemic has not gone away. In addition to airing the
program, more than 100 cable outlets will air HIV/AIDS public
service announcements (PSAs), including BET, MTV, Lifetime, and
Comedy Central, among others.
The half-hour documentary, produced by Cable Positive, which
first premiered on Discovery Health Channel on World AIDS Day,
December 1, 2002, explores the AIDS epidemic in the United States.
It reflects on the impact of the pandemic through a series of
frank and touching stories, echoing the sentiments of a number
of individuals affected by and involved with the disease, including
an HIV-positive mother of two in Atlanta, a college age HIV prevention
outreach worker in San Francisco, and activist Cleve Jones, founder
of the AIDS Memorial Quilt.
Cable Positive’s AIDS in the 21st Century will air in these
cities:
Akron, OH; Albany, NY; Baltimore, MD; Baton Rouge, LA; Chicago,
IL; Cleveland, OH; Detroit, MI; El Paso, TX; Hampton Roads, VA;
Los Angeles, CA; Louisville, KY; Minneapolis, MN; New Orleans,
LA; Oakland, CA; Omaha, NE; Philadelphia, PA; Providence, RI;
Raleigh, NC; San Diego, CA; San Francisco, CA; Santa Barbara,
CA; Seattle, WA; Waco, TX; Washington, DC; and Wichita, KS.
Cable Positive’s 2003 National HIV Testing Day campaign
was created to combat the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s
(CDC) estimates that there are more than 40,000 new HIV infections
each year. The campaign strives to raise AIDS awareness, encourage
HIV testing, and prevent further HIV transmission through the
airing of important HIV/AIDS programming.
Each Cable Positive PSA concludes with the CDC’s toll free
National AIDS Hotline, 1.800.342.AIDS (2437), and also include
the CDC’s
website, , for viewers to receive more information about HIV/AIDS
and to learn about resources in their community.
Cable networks and systems interested in airing HIV/AIDS programming
should contact Jesse Giuliani at 212.459.1547 or jesse@cablepositive.org.
