October Strategies’ Fundraiser
for Cable Positive Lets Hundreds of Mini-Maxwells Loose at the
Cable Industry’s National Show
CHICAGO, IL - June 8, 2003
October Strategies, Inc., a strategic communications and business
consulting company known for its unconventional approach, and
Cable Positive, the cable industry’s AIDS education and
awareness organization, today announced the Chicago arrival of
300 nodding likenesses of Paul Maxwell, a longtime cable industry
journalist, entrepreneur and innovator who has started and/or
run some 38+ publications, ranging from CATV Newsweekly to Colorado
Magazine to CableFax and Multichannel News. Having been selected
as October Strategies’ first bobblehead figure to be produced
as a fun and funky fundraiser for Cable Positive, Maxwell’s
likeness has “sprung” into Chicago as the industry
converges on the Windy City for the National Cable & Telecommunications
Association (NCTA)’s annual National Show. At the show,
BobbleMax, as he’s affectionately known, will appear in
several industry trade publications (including a cover story!),
and makes a cameo on The Cable Channel.
The
agreeable miniature look-alikes, replete with accurate renderings
of Maxwell’s signature beard, hair, glasses, cowboy hat,
fringed jacket, blue jeans and boots, will go on sale tomorrow
morning, June 9th at 10:30 AM at Cable Positive’s booth
(#1344), and will continue to be sold that day until 5:30 PM and
throughout the rest of the show’s exhibit hours (Tuesday,
10:30 AM – 5:00 PM and Wednesday, 8:30 AM – 12:30
PM). Maxwell himself will be at the Cable Positive booth on Tuesday
at 11:30 AM for those wishing to compare the two side by side.
Each figure costs $75.00, with proceeds from each sale being donated
by October Strategies to Cable Positive.
Conceived, designed and distributed by October Strategies as
part of its expansion into the marketing promotions and premiums
business, the bobblehead program’s purpose is to both raise
funds for Cable Positive and to pay lighthearted homage to the
“characters” who inhabit the ever-lively cable industry.
“We have been thrilled with all the excitement, industry
attention and sense of fun this program has generated,”
said Lela Cocoros, October Strategies co-founder and partner,
and a former Cable Positive board president. “But it’s
not just about the buzz. We’re collecting for a good cause
and encourage people to check out the fine craftsmanship, accurate
features and ‘boing’ quotient these bobbleheads possess.
They’re quality goods.”
Cable Positive President Steve Villano credited several industry
figures who have lent their support to the bobblehead program.
“In addition to Paul lending his likeness to the cause,
Larry Oliver of Reed Business provided advertising space in Multichannel
News; John Ourand and Seth Arenstein of PBI Media have promoted
the program in their CableFax publications; Rob Stoddard and his
staff are helping with some logistics and promoting the sale at
the NCTA store; and Steve Nelson of The Nelson Network provided
time on The Cable Channel to run a promotional spot to help remind
viewers of the bobbles’ availability.”
“It’s both amazing and noteworthy what some people
can and will do with a good idea, a good cause and limited resources,”
added LaRae Marsik, October Strategies’ other co-founder
“This program really personifies what October Strategies
is all about. We continually seek out the creative and different,
and the effectiveness of this program demonstrates what can be
done with ingenuity, dedication and a little elbow grease.”
Once the Maxwell figures are sold, October Strategies will make
the resulting donation to Cable Positive and begin soliciting
ideas from across the industry for the next bobblehead “honoree.”
Individuals interested in sounding off about the program and/or
nominating potential bobbleheads of the future, can visit October
Strategies’ website.
