Cable Positive, the cable and communications industry's AIDS action
organization, awarded grants totaling $46,400 to ten AIDS service
organizations partnering with their local cable systems in Cycle
11 of the Tony Cox Fund for Local HIV/AIDS Programming. The organization
also announced that applications are being accepted for Cycle 12
of the Tony Cox Fund in which $50,000 in grants will be awarded.
Cycle 11 grant recipients are: AIDS Alive and Adelphia, Wayne,
PA; Asian & Pacific Islander Coalition on HIV/AIDS (APICHA) and
Time Warner Cable, Queens, NY; Catskill Rural AIDS Services, Inc.
and Time Warner Cable, Oneonta, NY; Callen Lorde/Health Outreach
to Teens and Time Warner Cable, New York, NY; Hands United Together
and Adelphia, Van Nuys, CA; Let the Healing Begin and Cablevision,
Long Island, NY; Project Cope and MediaOne, Lynn, MA; Project Quest
and AT&T, Portland, OR; Latino Health Institute and MediaOne, Boston,
MA; and Women Alive Coalition and Media One, Hollywood, CA.
For example, Let Healing Begin, an organization focused on HIV/AIDS
education and prevention, is partnering with Cablevision of Long
Island to produce a program stressing the importance of getting
tested for HIV and the choices involved with knowing your status.
The hour program, targeted at teens, includes a dramatic performance
with a panel discussion following the play.
"The cable systems and their AIDS service organization partners
are planning to convey their strong HIV/AIDS message to a local
audience," said Steve Villano, executive director, Cable Positive.
"The Tony Cox Fund provides funding to AIDS organizations to produce
HIV/AIDS-related programming and encourages cable systems to form
working partnerships with their community-based AIDS organizations."
The Fund is named in memory of former chairman and CEO of Showtime
Networks, Inc. and a founding honorary chair of Cable Positive,
Winston "Tony" Cox. Grants are awarded for the creation of local
AIDS-related programming and PSAs in three grant cycles per year.
Since its inception in 1996, the Tony Cox Fund has awarded more
than $600,000 to AIDS service organizations across the United States.
