CABLE POSITIVE PARTNERS WITH JUDD WINICK OF MTV's THE REAL WORLD FOR WORLD AIDS DAY 2000 YOUTH HIV PREVENTION EFFORTS

Winick To Be Featured in Youth Targeted Public Service Announcement To Reach More Than 70 Million Cable Households

NEW YORK - September 20, 2000
Cable Positive, the cable and communications industry's AIDS action organization, has partnered with AIDS activist; award-winning cartoonist and member of MTV's The Real World San Francisco cast Judd Winick for its youth HIV prevention efforts for World AIDS Day 2000 (December 1). Winick will be featured in a public service announcement that will be telecast to more than 70 million cable households on World AIDS Day and throughout the month of December to communicate the messages of HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness to 13 to 25 year old cable viewers across America.

The spot entitled Science Lesson, produced jointly by Cable Positive and Slate Inc., will use jump cuts, graphics and music to appeal to the youth demographic about HIV prevention. It is set in a classroom with Winick portraying a teacher addressing a class about the effect the virus takes on the human immune system. The lesson - take measures to prevent contracting HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

"I am thrilled to be working with such a public-spirited and visionary organization as Cable Positive," said Winick. "It is an honor to be involved with their PSA campaign. I feel that I am keeping Pedro Zamora's memory alive.

" Continuing his role in the area of HIV/AIDS prevention, Winick released the critically acclaimed Pedro and Me: Friendship, Loss and What I Learned in early September 2000. The book chronicles in cartoon form his friendship with Pedro Zamora, AIDS educator and fellow The Real World San Francisco cast member who died of AIDS in 1994.

"Judd Winick speaks to this age group -- 13 to 25 year olds -- which accounts for 1 out of every 2 new HIV infections," said Steve Villano, Cable Positive executive director. "The face of HIV/AIDS is changing, becoming younger, and affecting women and people of color in alarming numbers. We must do everything we can to stop the fire of this infection from destroying whole communities."

Winick joins a list of AIDS activists, Cable Positive supporters and PSA spokespersons that includes Academy Award-winner Billy Bob Thornton, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Maya Angelou, Grammy Award-winning music artist Queen Latifah, Julian Bond, president of the NAACP, and Steve Kmetko of E! Entertainment Television.

Cable Positive is a national non-profit organization that was founded in February 1992 by three concerned cable executives with the mission of organizing cable's resources in the fight against AIDS. Cable Positive is dedicated to unifying the talents, resources, access and influence of the communications industry to raise AIDS awareness; to fund AIDS education, research and care; and to promote a more compassionate climate for people whose lives have been affected by HIV and AIDS. Cable Positive has grown to include supporters from every major cable network, MSO, system, hardware manufacturer, trade association, media publication, and affiliated industry vendors and suppliers.
