FUNDRAISER GOES TO THE NET:
DENVER CHAPTER OF CABLE POSITIVE USES INTERNET TO EXPAND CHARITY EFFORTS

Via the Web, people can get event information, bid on silent auction items and get a copy of the words to all the event's song parodies

DENVER, CO - October 10, 2001
The Denver chapter of Cable Positive has turned to the Internet to spread the word about its upcoming musical parody and raise funds to assist those infected with HIV and AIDS.

The chapter has unveiled a temporary Web presence that provides an opportunity to bid in a Silent Auction, buy a "virtual ticket" to the performance, and learn details about "Positively Cable Aught One: The Technical Trials of Our Sweet Cablene," its 7th annual musical parody fundraiser to benefit Denver's Rainbow House and Cable Positive. The sold-out event, aiming to raise $100,000, is set for Thursday evening, October 18, at Comedy Works in Denver.

The Web presence is a new feature accompanying this year's show, said Debbie Barackman, chair of the event committee.

"We are trying a couple of new things incremental to the basic event," Barackman said. "We want to share the wacky fun that Positively Cable has provided Denver for the last seven years, while respectfully promoting the good work being done by Rainbow House and Cable Positive."

By going to "Positively Cable", people can get information about where the money goes, the backgrounds of the cast, and more.

Cable Positive has rolled out its event-related silent auction on the Web site. People going to the Web page can bid on a list of auction items, such as tickets to sporting events, vacation packages, consumer electronics, and spa activities. Online bidding got under way last week and will continue until 6:00 PM Mountain Time on Tuesday, October 16. The highest on-line bidder will be contacted prior to Thursday, October 18, and final bidding will be held live at Comedy Works on the evening of the event, with bidding closing at 7:00 PM that day. Only those at the event will be able to bid during that time, so the highest online bidders will be offered the opportunity to raise their bids ahead of time.

"The silent auction items provide real value," said Lenny Melamedas, Silent Auction chair. "People throughout the country now have the opportunity to bid in a silent auction that previously only those attending the event could have done. It's a demonstration of real interactivity."

In addition, this week event organizers are introducing "V-Tix." V-Tix stands for "virtual ticket" and allows anyone with Internet access to enjoy a cyber version of the Positively Cable experience. People will be invited by email to visit the Positively Cable section of the cablepositive.org site and click on the V-Tix link. There they will find the opportunity to request a copy of all the words to all the parody songs in the show, for a minimum contribution of $25 billable to the user's American Express card. The song parodies will be delivered via email on October 19, the day after the show.

"People come to the Positively Cable show and walk away saying they never laughed so hard," said Paul Braun, who is managing the Internet initiatives. "We thought that we could, in a small way, share some of the fun with people throughout the industry while raising a little bit more money for a great cause."

The Internet coordination of the web presence and the email invitations are through the kind donation of services by CableNetworkz.

"We were delighted to apply the same tools and strategies we use to help cable companies extend their businesses onto the Web, to a cable industry fundraising effort for a great cause," said Marc Hertz, principal of CableNetWorkz.

Money raised by Positively Cable benefits Cable Positive, the national nonprofit organization for the cable industry's fight against HIV/AIDS, and the Volunteers of America's Rainbow House, which provides care for children whose lives are affected by HIV and the AIDS virus in metro Denver. Funds raised by the show will be spent on Cable Positive's national prevention and awareness efforts, and Rainbow House's construction of a new infant facility for children.

"Positively Cable Aught One," presented by AT&T Broadband, promises to skewer cable industry has-beens and wannabes in an interactive melodrama for a new millennium. The show will lampoon the cable, satellite, Internet and telecommunications industries in story and songs inspired by great musical hits of the 1890's and early 1900's.
