Category Descriptions

Outstanding Biographical Program
A biographical series or episode or special that profiles an individual or group and their relationship to HIV/AIDS.

Outstanding Community Partnership:
Local programming created in partnership between a local cable outlet and a community-based AIDS service organization highlighting the issue within their community. Programming covering or promoting events, talk shows, public service announcements and other forms of programming can be submitted.

Outstanding Documentary:
A documentary exploring any aspect of HIV/AIDS.

Outstanding News Coverage:
A news story produced by or for a cable network dealing with any issues surrounding HIV/AIDS. Stories on people living with HIV/AIDS, drug therapies, interviews with HIV/AIDS organizations and their spokespersons, and/or World AIDS Day or National HIV Testing Day coverage can be submitted. All stories dealing with any topic concerning HIV/AIDS will be considered.

Outstanding News Magazine:
A newsmagazine series episode or special that deals with HIV/AIDS.

Outstanding Original Film/Movie:
An original film or made-for-TV movie including an HIV/AIDS character or storyline.

Outstanding Original Series:
One or more episode of an original drama or comedy cable television series dealing with or discussing HIV/AIDS.

Outstanding Public Service Announcement (PSA):
A public service announcement created to raise AIDS awareness, promote HIV prevention, and/or increase HIV/AIDS education efforts.

Outstanding Special Programming:
A special program of 30 minutes or more produced by or for a cable network to raise the level of HIV/AIDS awareness. Special editions of news programs, documentaries, benefit concerts and performances for an HIV/AIDS organization, etc. will be considered.

Outstanding Program (Spanish Language)
This category recognizes an outstanding Spanish language program dealing with HIV/AIDS. Original films, documentaries, biographical programs and news stories will all be considered in this category.

Eligibility

Any HIV/AIDS-related program originally produced and aired in the United States between January 1 and December 31, 2005.

Judging

Entries will go through a judging process conducted by a blue ribbon panel of media writers and critics and HIV/AIDS experts. They will be judged by the following criteria:

  • Content Accuracy: is the information provided on HIV/AIDS consistent with current research and scientific information?
  • Message Clarity: is the message of the program clear to the viewing audience?
  • Program Quality: does the program have high production values (script, direction, characterizations, effective news reporting, etc.)
